Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan: #bookreview

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My Two Cents…..

I received this book in an Owl Crate box having no prior knowledge of what it was about. I adored the cover so I started reading it right away.
.
I was blown away by this fantasy! The world Ngan created is inspired by her Malaysian upbringing and had a lush, dynamic feel.
.
Within the Asian inspired world is a demon king that takes human girls as concubines. Ngan delivers an impressive story of forbidden love between two of the girls, as they fight for freedom and their relationship.
.
There are definitely dark places in the story but there is also light, love, friendship and hope in the most hopeless times.
.
This book completely transported me to a whole new world with characters full of heart and soul. I felt as if I were a part of their world while reading and left a part of my heart with them when I was finished. This book has stayed with me all this time and I am actually ashamed that I am just now picking up Girls of Storm and Shadow!

Synopsis:

In this richly developed fantasy, Lei is a member of the Paper caste, the lowest and most persecuted class of people in Ikhara. She lives in a remote village with her father, where the decade-old trauma of watching her mother snatched by royal guards for an unknown fate still haunts her. Now, the guards are back and this time it’s Lei they’re after — the girl with the golden eyes whose rumored beauty has piqued the king’s interest.

Over weeks of training in the opulent but oppressive palace, Lei and eight other girls learns the skills and charm that befit a king’s consort. There, she does the unthinkable: she falls in love. Her forbidden romance becomes enmeshed with an explosive plot that threatens her world’s entire way of life. Lei, still the wide-eyed country girl at heart, must decide how far she’s willing to go for justice and revenge.
